On Being a Part of Something Bigger than Me

Do you ever get the sense that what is going on is more than you can imagine? A week ago, I was experiencing that feeling. Journey to Bethlehem has become my church's biggest ministry project of the year. My family is very involved, from helping set up weeks before to being there every night acting in and behind the scenes of the event. I'm so glad I have had the opportunity to have been there since the very first year and watch it grow by leaps and bounds.

Putting together a drive-thru live nativity is no small task, and I'm thankful to even have a small part to play in this production. Over the years, people have come, cried, invited their friends, and even given their hearts to the Lord. This year though, as I greeted visitors and asked how the 'Journey' had been so far, there was an underlying sense that God had planned this.

From the willingness of the people who give so much time and energy to the crowds that come and drive through, God was moving. It wasn't a mistake when our new pastor had this crazy idea four years ago. It was something our church and our community desperately needed.

Looking back, I don't think we could have done it any sooner or later. People who knew lighting, sound recording, acting, and traffic patterns were among us. Each year, new things have been added by people who knew how to do it. The very land we have, I believe, was something God planned. Journey to Bethlehem was meant to be here.

And it is certainly not a perfect production. Animals act up, people get stressed, costumes are lost and found again, last minute changes occur. We're always looking at how to make it better. But I think we can also rest in the fact that God planned this. Each one of us is just a small part of something much bigger than all of us put together. Without God, we are nothing and, by His grace, He shows up. Again and again. Year after year and night after night.

So here's to each day of work, each hilarious mishap, and each pot of hot chocolate. It is incredibly worth it to be a part of something bigger than yourself.
